Service Description
What is ORISHA?. Orisha (also given as Orisa and Orishas) are supernatural entities usually referred to as deities in the Yoruba religion of West Africa. The Orishas traveled to the Americas and the Caribbean via the Transatlantic Slave Trade, when many of the Yoruba were enslaved, and there they became syncretized with the Christian saints of Catholicism. The Yoruba were able to continue practicing their religion by nominally becoming Catholic as the saints served the same purpose in Catholicism as the Orishas did in their native faith, as intermediaries between a believer and the supreme deity. What to expect ? In this class is intended for intermediate level dancers who already have some experience in salsa and basic turns. We will learn about the root and origen of Afrocuban Orishas dance but also how can we incorporate in our everyday salsa dance moves. This combination is spectacular to show-off your dance skills but most importantly your knowledge about the culture and musicality. Some of the Orishas we will learn are: Chango/Shango – God of thunder, warrior deity Yemaya – Divine mother, goddess of water Obatala – God of peaceEshu – Divine messenger Oshun/Ochun – Goddess of rivers & waterfalls, love, femininity Babalu Aye – God of disease Many salsa songs reference the Orishas, especially salsa music with a strong Cuban influence so the next time you are listening to salsa music, see if you can identify when the Orishas are mentioned or if you are up for a challenge, looks up some of the dance movements that are associated with the various Orishas and incorporate them into your dancing.
