Afrocuban Orishas (All levels)
Discover the movement and energy of the Orishas.
Service Description
This course is designed for all levels of dancers. **Afro-Cuban Orishas Course – Movement, Rhythm & Tradition** Afro-Cuban Orisha dance is deeply connected to the spiritual, musical, and cultural traditions brought to Cuba from West Africa, particularly through the Yoruba people. Over generations, these traditions became an essential part of Afro-Cuban culture, combining rhythm, movement, storytelling, spirituality, and community. Each **Orisha** has its own identity, energy, movement vocabulary, rhythms, colors, and characteristics. Through dance, we learn how these qualities are expressed through the body and how movement connects directly to the music. In this course, students will explore the movement principles and rhythms associated with different Orishas, including their unique qualities, gestures, and ways of interpreting the music. * Some Orishas are expressed through **powerful, grounded, and energetic movements**. * Others are characterized by **fluidity, elegance, control, and grace**. * Each dance has its own relationship with the **drums, rhythm, character, and cultural meaning**. This **progressive course is open to all dance levels**, from complete beginners to experienced dancers. The focus is not only on learning choreography, but on understanding the **traditional movement vocabulary, body coordination, rhythm, musicality, and cultural context** behind Afro-Cuban Orisha dance. Throughout the course, we will work with different Orishas and rhythms, giving students the opportunity to recognize their individual characteristics while also understanding how they connect within the broader Afro-Cuban tradition. Studying Afro-Cuban movement is also extremely valuable for dancers of **Salsa Cubana, Rumba, Son, and other Cuban dance styles**. It develops stronger body movement, coordination, musical interpretation, grounding, and a deeper understanding of the cultural foundations behind Cuban dance. We invite **dancers of all levels** to explore this powerful tradition, connect movement with rhythm and meaning, and develop a deeper appreciation for the **history, culture, and spirit of Afro-Cuban dance**.
